Somalia Flag

Somalia is flat in the south, with mountains in the north. In 1960 northern British Somaliland voted to join southern Italian Somali land to create Somalia. Somalis are one of the most homogeneous peoples in Africa, but unity is thwarted by clan based rivalries. Somalia has been without a national government after civil war ended its dictatorship in 1991. It now has a transitional parliamentary federal government. The independent “Republic of Somaliland,” while acknowledged, is not officially recognized internationally, as efforts continue to reunify Somalia.
